EARTHQUAKE

We experienced our first earthquake yesterday. Sure, there have been little rumblings here and there that have made us think, "Was that an earthquake?" But there was no question yesterday. The kids and I had been reading and the whole room started shaking for about 5-7 seconds. My thoughts were, "Do they usually get more intense than this?" "Is it going to get worse?" "How long do these last?" Of course, by the time I finished thinking these things it was over. We had a man here installing the dishwasher and I asked what exactly one was to do in an earthquake. I looked up and saw sweet Olivia in the "tuck and duck" position with her hands over her head under the kitchen table that she so dearly loves. It was so cute. Thanks for the lesson, Liv. I'll know for next time. And a big thanks to Grace Christian Preschool for teaching my child the appropriate thing to do in an earthquake. I guess they have earthquake drills??

Now, I am from Oklahoma. We do not have earthquakes in Oklahoma (which my dear dad called to remind me of as a possible incentive to get us to move back. . .). We have tornadoes. I have decided that while both cause a bit of a rush, if I had to choose, I would choose a tornado. Here is why. You know a tornado is coming. There are big sirens to let you know and it is all that is on the news when there is one anywhere in the state. You also have a pretty good idea of when and where it is going to be and how intense it will be. You have tornado shelters to hide in. Earthquakes have no warning, no place to hide, and you have no idea how intense it will be. This doesn't mean we're moving back. It just means if I HAD to choose. . .

Glad all the Bakers are okay. My first earthquake was the HUGE Northridge one in 1994... very exciting.

I have lived where there are hurricanes (TX Gulf Coast), tornadoes (OK) and earthquakes (CA.) Hurricanes are definitely the best... you get DAYS of warning and have time to leave town if you want. Tornadoes are second... at least minutes of warnings if not hours (go Rick Mitchell!)And, I agree with you... the earthquakes have to come in last place with no warning whatsoever.

By the way, tuck and duck is great. We also always heard you should stand in the door jamb and have an emergency kit ready to go... but we never did that.

BTW, loved Lucy's princess pic. She's gorgeous.

I've lived here my whole life and I still get freaked out by earthquakes! FYI (I learned this the other day) when there is an earthquake and you have to take cover, the best place to be is NEXT to something (like a table, doorway, etc.) because if/when it collapses there will most likely be an air pocket next to an object rather than underneath it.

Glad to hear it wasn't too traumatic for everyone!

Carrie,
I was actually going to e-mail you and ask which was worse: the randomness of an earthquake vs. the impending doom of a tornado. Glad you made it through with only a good story!
Love you guys,
Bevan

You know, I think a solution to your problem would be moving to Colorado. We definitely don't have earthquakes & the occasional tornado. :-)

We only had to get in our safe room from a tornado one time growing up. It's good to know that Liv knows the right thing to do in an earthquake. Glad that you all are ok after the scare. Love you.

Yes, this was a little scary and was almost enough incentive to get out of Southern CA. No not really but the thought did cross my mind. This was my first bigger one too, I was shaking for 30 min after. Glad it wasn't bigger:) I'm right there with you on the Tornado thing, the no warning on earthquakes freaks me out!

Brad and Carrie,

We just found your blog and are excited to hear your family has expanded. We can't imagine an earthquake sneaking up on us since all we know is tornados. We are starting a new blog and hope to have pics up soon. Gald to see you guys are well. God Bless
